Phyrexian Unlife is a powerful card that can benefit control or combo decks looking to stall the game and buy time to set up their win condition, particularly in a white-based strategy. While it offers a unique form of protection by preventing you from losing the game due to life loss and redirecting damage as poison counters, there are better options like Solemnity that can completely shut down certain strategies. Phyrexian Unlife should see play in specific metagames where its abilities are particularly effective, but it may not always be the optimal choice depending on the deck's overall strategy and the current state of the format.

If you’re at 0 or less life, you can’t pay any amount of life except 0.

Phyrexian Unlife won’t affect damage that reduces your life total from a positive number to 0 or less. For example, if you’re at 3 life and are dealt 5 damage, you’ll end up at -2 life. The next time you’re dealt damage, it will be dealt as though its source had infect.
