This card, Lich's Caress, would be beneficial in a control deck that focuses on removing threats from the opponent's board while gaining life to prolong the game. However, there are more efficient removal spells in black such as Murder or Vraska's Contempt that provide immediate removal without the life gain, making them better choices in most situations. Lich's Caress could see play in a budget deck or in a specific meta where gaining life is crucial, but it may not be a top choice in competitive play.

If the target creature is an illegal target by the time Lich’s Caress tries to resolve, the spell doesn’t resolve. You won’t gain any life.
