This card would be beneficial in a deck focused on landfall triggers and controlling the board with defensive creatures. While Shoal Serpent can become an offensive threat with its ability to lose defender temporarily, there are likely better options for a similar mana cost that offer more versatility or power on the battlefield. Players may consider cards like Trench Behemoth or Slinn Voda, the Rising Deep for more impactful plays, making it less likely that Shoal Serpent would see play in competitive Magic: The Gathering decks.

The landfall ability triggers whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control for any reason. It triggers whenever you play a land, as well as whenever a spell or ability (such as Rampant Growth) causes you to put a land onto the battlefield under your control. It will even trigger when a spell or ability causes another player to put a land onto the battlefield under your control (as can happen with Yavimaya Dryad’s ability, for example).
