Will Yu-Gi-Oh! Genesys Prosper in 2026?
When Yu-Gi-Oh! Genesys came out, the community was quite excited. Removing Link and Pendulum monsters, as well as replacing the classic banlist format for an innovative point system, made many of us pay attention. The goal behind the format seemed to be to open space for old strategies and also allow us more freedom when building decks.
However, despite the initial excitement, Genesys quickly lost momentum and didn't stand out too much throughout 2025. Now, in 2026, there is a big question in all our minds: Will Genesys prosper in 2026, or will it disappear and be forever remembered as a good idea that just didn't work?
Below, check out our review of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Genesys format!
The Goal Behind Genesys
Genesys was an attempt to bring back a less explosive Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, with better pacing. The foundation of the format, the point system, should foster an environment where creativity matters more than powercreep.

However, Genesys slowly moved away from that goal. While we explored all the possibilities this new format opened up, we discovered dynamics and strategies that went against everything Genesys was supposed to be at first. In the end, the format became quite different from what we expected when it was first announced.
Where It All Went Wrong
Despite the innovative goal that attracted so many players, Genesys started losing popularity when players realized the best decks in Advanced were also the best decks in Genesys.
Modern archetypes simply adapted better to the point system and are a lot more consistent and powerful than the old decks. So, powercreep prevented classic strategies from finding space, which, as we mentioned, is the opposite of what this format was supposed to be.

Furthermore, whenever new cards came out, the point system had to be updated. This was to be expected, but it also made Genesys quite unstable.
Another important factor was the nature of the archetypes themselves. Most of them are designed to see play in Advanced, not in a "limited" format like Genesys. The result was that Genesys quickly moved away from the highly anticipated "classic and controlled" experience KONAMI promised us it would be when it was first announced.
Will Genesys Prosper in 2026?
Genesys might have lost a lot of popularity after the initial excitement faded, but it still has room to grow in 2026. The only issue is that this will depend solely on how much effort KONAMI will put into it. The foundation is already great, and the community showed a lot of interest in it when it was first announced. All it needs now is a few adjustments to find the right path forward.
Firstly, KONAMI needs to support Genesys directly, which includes designing new archetypes with this format in mind, not just Advanced.
Another adjustment that could guarantee the future of Genesys is this: the meta decks in Advanced should be more expensive in the Genesys point system. That way, they won't make the format unbalanced because of how powerful they are.
Like so, powercreep won't prevent healthy archetypes from seeing play in the Genesys meta, and the format will be closer to what it was originally supposed to be.
