About Radiant Typhoon

Radiant Typhoon is a relatively new archetype that actually centers around the iconic Mystical Space Typhoon. It also interacts a lot with quick-play spells.

Its game style focuses on controlling the game and getting ahead when a quick-play spell activates and/or when Mystical Space Typhoon is in play or in the graveyard.

Below, check out exactly how Radiant Typhoon works!

Radiant Typhoon List

Main Deck

Radiant Typhoon Swen, Radiant Typhoon Eldam, and Radiant Typhoon Chant are this archetype's main starters. They stand out because they get spells, traps ("Swen"), and monsters ("Eldam" and "Chant"). Furthermore, Radiant Typhoon Chant can also get Mystical Space Typhoon, this deck's main card.

This deck also plays a starter that isn't part of its main archetype, but is quite useful. Noble Knight's Shield-Bearer's effect can get you "Eldam" so that you can kickstart your strategy.

Radiant Typhoon Krosea is one of the main cards in this deck. It gets any card in this archetype, even Mystical Space Typhoon itself.

Furthermore, "Krosea" can be considered a handtrap specifically for this archetype. That's because, if the opponent activates a quick-play spell in the first turn in the game, you can put this card in play from your hand.

Radiant Typhoon Meghala is an important combo piece in this deck because it is the only card in this archetype that can summon monsters directly from the deck.

Radiant Typhoon Varuroon, the Vibrant Vortex can be considered this strategy's boss monster because its effect negates monster effects.

Radiant Typhoon Fonix, the Great Flame is another interaction with an incredibly versatile effect. It lets you shuffle 2 enemy cards back into their deck.

Radiant Typhoon Vision and Radiant Typhoon Ascendance also get Mystical Space Typhoon, but they have other effects. Vision draws 2 cards, and Ascendance special summons a Radiant Typhoon monster from the graveyard.

Radiant Typhoon Mandate is this archetype's trap and main interaction. It is a negate that you can only use once per chain, and only when a Mystical Space Typhoon activates.

Mystical Space Typhoon is what makes this archetype make sense. It has a pretty simple effect: it destroys a spell or trap in play.

Nonetheless, now that there is an entire archetype around it, this card has returned to the meta and become quite versatile.

Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring is the only proper handtrap in this list. It sees play in this archetype almost exclusively as an out for Mulcharmy Purulia, which is extremely strong against it.

Shiina, Twin Tempests of Celestial Thunder is something between a handtrap and a boardbreaker. It also works really well as a board clear because it interacts with monsters, spells, and traps, so it is quite versatile.

Super Polymerization, Forbidden Droplet, The Fallen & The Virtuous, and Called by the Grave are the main quick-play spells in the format. This deck plays as many copies of them as it possibly can because it revolves entirely around them.

Extra Deck

Radiant Typhoon Varuroon, the Marine Eidolon recycles resources and makes this list more consistent. With it, Radiant Typhoon's grind game will be as efficient as it can be.

Furthermore, this card has a pretty interesting effect that deals with monsters that absolutely can't go to the graveyard if you want to win.

Hraesvelgr, the Desperate Doom Eagle is a useful piece in this extra deck, particularly because of the way it interacts in a few matchups. It is also a great finisher.

Wynn the Wind Charmer, Verdant is quite useful in the mirror match because it lets you use your opponent's resources against them. It "steals" a Wind monster from their graveyard and lets you use it for your combos.

Greatfly is a pretty simple card that is quite useful in OTK combos because it buffs all Wind monsters in play.

Totem Bird is excellent in the final board if you have any "leftover bodies". Its effect, which negates a spell/trap activation, is incredibly well-positioned in the format, both in the mirror match and against Dracotail variants.

Ecclesia and the Dark Dragon and Albion the Branded Dragon see play in this list solely as The Fallen & The Virtuous targets.

When you use them with this list's main trap, which recycles quick-play spells, you can even loop The Fallen & The Virtuous.

Garura, Wings of Resonant Life and Mudragon of the Swamp are Super Polymerization's main targets because they're the most generic cards in this group.

Secreterion Dragon definitely stands out, as it is extremely strong against Dracotail because of its floodgate effect. It disables effects on Dracotail extra deck monsters.

The Azamina kit sees play in this extra deck mostly to counter Dracotail Magistus. As such, Saint Azamina is the most common Super Polymerization target in this matchup. Furthermore, you can access Azamina through it.

As for Azamina Ilia Silvia, it is another Super Polymerization target. You can essentially tribute this card to negate something with Polymerization.

Radiant Typhoon Main Game Plan

Radiant Typhoon can spam a lot of monsters on the board, but it doesn't play extensive combos. The combos in this deck are quite simple, as they're supposed to build the following board:

Monster zone: Radiant Typhoon Varuroon, the Marine Eidolon.

Spell/Trap zone:Radiant Typhoon Mandate, Radiant Typhoon Ascendance, and 2 copies of Mystical Space Typhoon.

Main Combo

I'll leave below the main combo if you open with Radiant Typhoon Swen:

> First, special summon Radiant Typhoon Swen and activate its effect to get Radiant Typhoon Chant from your deck.

> Next, activate Radiant Typhoon Chant to get Radiant Typhoon Eldam from your deck.

> Now, special summon Radiant Typhoon Eldam and activate its effect to get Radiant Typhoon Krosea.

> Normal summon Radiant Typhoon Krosea by tributing Radiant Typhoon Eldam, and activate its effect to get Mystical Space Typhoon and Radiant Typhoon Ascendance.

> Use Radiant Typhoon Krosea and Radiant Typhoon Swen as material to link summon Radiant Typhoon Varuroon, the Marine Eidolon, and use its effect to get the second copy of Mystical Space Typhoon.

> Activate Radiant Typhoon Ascendance to get the third copy of Mystical Space Typhoon from your deck. Then, as an answer to this effect, activate one of the Mystical Space Typhoon in your hand to destroy Radiant Typhoon Ascendance itself.

> At this point, you'll have 2 effects to trigger, but you must set up the chain in the following way: Radiant Typhoon Varuroon, the Marine Eidolon as the chain link 1 (so that you can put a Radiant Typhoon Mandate from your deck face-up on your board) and Radiant Typhoon Ascendance as the chain link 2 (so that you can return it from the graveyard when you put it in play).

> To finish, put your two copies of Mystical Space Typhoon still in your hand in play and end your turn.

This will be your final board:

Main Matchups in the Format

One of the main matchups in the format is the Radiant Typhoon mirror match. In this duel, both players need to manage their resources well because any bad move, no matter how small, matters. Skill will determine the winner: the player who best uses their quick-play spells will come out victorious, regardless if they go first or second.

Another pretty common duel that is considered by many the most important in the format is Radiant Typhoon versus Dracotail variants. While the mirror match tests skill, this duel tests balance. The Radiant Typhoon player needs to know how to balance control and proactivity against a much more explosive deck that can put a lot of pressure on you in just a single turn.

You'll still have to use your quick-play spells at the right time, but you must also keep answers ready for the opponent's fusion spells. They can break the board very easily and turn the game against you.

The mirror match is all about getting ahead bit by bit, but the Dracotail matchup is all about surviving the early game. You must take the game into a controlled grind game, when Radiant Typhoon is often more comfortable.
