Introduction

The graveyard is no longer just where used cards go. It has become one of the main places to get resources in Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. That's because, for many decks, being able to access and reuse cards from the graveyard is critical.

That is why there are several cards that restrict or even completely shut down those types of strategies and target the graveyard before anything else. With that in mind, let's see 10 cards that can heavily punish strategies that rely too much on this resource.

Check out the 10 best cards you can use to punish graveyard decks!

Yu-Gi-Oh! - 10 Cards to Punish Graveyard Decks

10 - The End of Anubis

The End of Anubis is a little-known floodgate monster with an extremely simple but very powerful effect: while it remains face-up on the field, the effects on monsters, Spells, and Traps that activate in the graveyard or move cards out of the graveyard cannot be activated. In practice, it makes the graveyard virtually unusable.

Despite how powerful it is, The End of Anubis has one major drawback: it's not easy to summon. As a result, only a few strategies can use it. However, you can search/get it through a combo in decks that use the “Chimera Illusion” engine, and it can be a very interesting weapon in formats filled with decks that heavily depend on the graveyard.

9 - Exosister Asophiel

Exosister Asophiel is another highly specific card, but its effect completely shuts down the graveyard for an entire turn. When you Xyz summon it using an "Exosister" monster as material, it prevents both players from activating card effects in the graveyard for the rest of that turn.

The most important detail is that this is a lingering effect. Therefore, even if “Asophiel” leaves the battlefield after it is activated, it will remain in place until the end of the turn. It is very similar to the currently banned Abyss Dweller in that sense.

Its main problem is that you must use it in the Exosister strategy. Even so, when you summon it against the right strategy, “Asophiel” is often a true win condition, particularly against decks centered around graveyard effects.

8 - Macro Cosmos

Macro Cosmos is the first classic card in this article, and it is highly effective at making the opponent’s graveyard useless. While it is face-up on the battlefield, any card that would go to the graveyard is banished instead. This makes Macro Cosmos a broader version of a few other similar cards.

However, its biggest problem is precisely the way it works. As a continuous trap, it must remain face-up to work, and, as such, the opponent can simply remove it from the field.

7 - Soul Drain

Soul Drain is a floodgate and very similar to its “sister,” Skill Drain. However, while Skill Drain negates the effects of face-up monsters on the battlefield, Soul Drain prevents the effects of monsters in the graveyard from being activated. The same applies to banished monsters.

Like so, this card is especially effective against strategies that use the graveyard as an extension of your hand, activating monster effects after those monsters end up there.

However, it has a few problems. First, it needs to stay face-up on the battlefield to work. It also does not prevent cards from being moved out of the graveyard and doesn't stop Spell and Trap effects.

6 - Necrovalley

Necrovalley is one of the most iconic cards when it comes to making the graveyard useless. It prevents cards in the graveyard from being banished and negates effects that move cards from the graveyard to another location.

As a Field Spell, Necrovalley works as long as it is face-up. This makes it extremely powerful against decks that rely on bringing back, banishing, or moving their own resources from the graveyard.

However, it has to stay in play, face-up, to work, and it does not stop effects that do anything other than move cards from the graveyard, so it is not among the top 5 cards in this article.

5 - Dimensional Fissure

Dimensional Fissure is one of the most classic ways to prevent monsters from being used from the graveyard. While it is face-up on the battlefield, any monster that would go to the graveyard is banished instead.

This makes it especially effective against decks that rely on sending monsters to the graveyard to activate effects. Even if the opponent manages to put new monsters on the battlefield, they will not be able to get to their graveyard as usual, and the opponent won't be able to reuse them later.

It struggles with the same problems as Necrovalley. On the other hand, it is a Spell rather than a Trap, so you can use it immediately.

4 - Different Dimension Ground

Different Dimension Ground is one of the most explosive ways to punish a graveyard deck. When activated, any monster that would go to the graveyard that turn is banished instead.

Its key advantage over Dimensional Fissure and even Macro Cosmos is that it does not need to stay on the battlefield to work. Once “DDG” resolves, its effect stays active for the rest of the turn because it is a lingering effect.

However, its effect only affects monsters, and it is exclusively a going-first card because it is a Trap.

3 - Silent Graveyard

Silent Graveyard is quite interesting if you want to completely shut down effects activated in the graveyard, but ironically, it sees little play. You must discard 1 card to activate it. Then, the effects of cards that activate in the graveyard are negated for that turn.

Its greatest advantages are that it negates effects from any type of card, is useful both going first and going second because it is a Quick-Play Spell, and has a lingering effect.

The downside is that you'll have to discard a card and gain nothing from it, considering the effects that could be activated in the graveyard will be shut down for that turn.

2 - Gravekeeper's Inscription

Gravekeeper's Inscription is one of the most versatile ways to punish decks that rely on the graveyard, precisely because it lets you choose which effect you want to use. During your Main Phase, you can activate one of its effects until the end of your opponent’s turn: prevent both players from activating card effects in the graveyard, prevent both players from banishing cards from the graveyard, or prevent both players from special summoning monsters from any graveyard.

This means this card can adapt to whatever the opponent is trying to do. Another major advantage is that you can use it both when going first and going second, and it will be just as efficient. In addition, all of its “abilities” are lingering effects, which makes “Inscription” even more powerful.

1 - Dimension Shifter

Dimension Shifter is probably the most brutal card to deal with decks that rely on the graveyard. While you have no cards in your own graveyard, it can go to the graveyard, and after it resolves, any card that would go to the graveyard until the end of the next turn is banished instead.

What sets “Shifter” apart from the other cards is that, like Gravekeeper's Inscription, it has a lingering effect that lasts for two turns. Furthermore, because it is a hand trap, it can come into play during either player’s turn.

Its biggest problem is that your graveyard must be empty for it to work, so it's not that great to draw later on.

Even so, the fact it can come into play from your hand and it has a lingering effect that lasts for two turns makes Dimension Shifter the most effective card to punish graveyard decks in Yu-Gi-Oh! history.
