About Empty the Pits

Empty the Pits, Instant, designed by Ryan Alexander Lee first released in Sep, 2014 in the set Khans of Tarkir and was printed exactly in 2 different ways. It's currently being selled by the minimum price of 9.31.

This card, Empty the Pits, would be beneficial in a graveyard-focused deck that aims to fill up the graveyard quickly with cards to enable the Delve mechanic efficiently. Decks that utilize self-mill strategies or have ways to fill the graveyard consistently would find this card useful for generating a large number of Zombie tokens. However, there are potentially better options like Army of the Damned which creates 13 tapped 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens for a fixed cost, making it more reliable and impactful in most scenarios. Overall, Empty the Pits could see play in specific graveyard-centric decks but might not be as competitive as other token-generating options available.

Rules

03/19/21

Because delve isn’t an alternative cost, it can be used in conjunction with alternative costs, such as flashback. It can also be used to pay for additional costs that include generic mana.

03/19/21

Delve doesn’t change a spell’s mana cost or converted mana cost. For example, Treasure Cruise’s converted mana cost is 8 even if you exiled three cards to cast it.

Because delve isn’t an alternative cost, it can be used in conjunction with alternative costs.

09/20/14

The rules for delve have changed slightly since it was last in an expansion. Previously, delve reduced the cost to cast a spell. Under the current rules, you exile cards from your graveyard at the same time you pay the spell’s cost. Exiling a card this way is simply another way to pay that cost.

09/20/14

You can’t exile cards to pay for the colored mana requirements of a spell with delve.
