A deck that thrives on punishing opponents for casting spells, such as a control or stax deck, would benefit from including Kaervek the Merciless. While Kaervek can be a powerful deterrent against spell-heavy strategies, there are better options like Torbran, Thane of Red Fell, who provides consistent damage without relying on opponents' spells. Kaervek can be a situational inclusion in certain metagames, but may not always be the most efficient choice for competitive play.

An ability that triggers when a player casts a spell resolves before the spell that caused it to trigger. It resolves even if that spell is countered.
